Women's Health at CMMC:
We Take You Through Every Stage of Life

The staff of medical professionals at Central Montgomery Medical Center (CMMC) may seem like your best friends: they can stick with you through thick and thin during many of life's hurdles. Whether you're starting a family, experiencing life changes or enjoying your mature years, you can find the medical care you need right here, close to home.

The Family BirthCenter
With a staff of obstetricians who have more than 65 years combined experience, and partnerships with leading university hospital systems, CMMC's Family BirthCenter is a leader in area obstetric care, says Mary Shanahan, RN, Director of the center.

"We offer university-level care in a smaller, more intimate setting," she says. "Because of our size, every baby born here is treated like a member of the family."

At the center, maternal-fetal medicine specialists from Temple University School of Medicine's Perinatal Center; Nemours Cardiac Center at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children; and Bryn Mawr Neonatology Associates are on call 24 hours a day to provide specialty care to the center's High-Risk Pregnancy Clinic, labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum units.

You Can Get Gynecologic Care, Too
Abnormal periods or other feminine issues are sometimes part of life, but when problems interfere with your daily activities, it's time to see your physician.

"Women struggling with urinary incontinence, heavy bleeding, uterine prolapse and other uncomfortable symptoms come to us," says Dipti Shah- Parikh, MD, FACOG, OB/GYN at CMMC.

Procedures to treat menstrual problems include:

  • Minimally invasive hysterectomy -- Surgical removal of the uterus helps to alleviate bleeding caused by uterine fibroids or hormonal changes in the body.
  • Endometrial ablation -- Heavy bleeding is eased by removing the uterine lining that sheds during each menstrual cycle.
  • Hormonal IUD -- Intrauterine devices used as contraceptives also help to alleviate heavy blood flow.

If you are suffering from a leaky bladder you may also find relief through:

  • Pelvic reconstruction -- Strong surgical mesh reinforces the connective tissue of prolapsed organs, such as the vagina or uterus, which can descend and cause incontinence.
  • Suburethral sling -- Inability to hold urine is corrected by reinforcing the connective tissue between the urethra and vagina.
